The nearest tasting rooms are Idiom, Lourensford, Journey's End and Morgenster, all within a short drive of Plot 50. Beyond those, Vergelegen sits in Somerset West and Waterford or Benguela Cove are worth the longer trip. We can point you to the ones we think you will enjoy and book a table where it helps.

The Helderberg has some of the Cape's most established wedding venues. Lourensford and Vergelegen offer the classic estate look, Cavalli brings a contemporary sculpture-gallery setting, and Benguela Cove sits beside the lagoon. Idiom offers panoramic vineyard views from Sir Lowry's Pass. Our guests often visit each one on a tasting day before deciding.

Beaches

Bikini Beach in Gordon's Bay is the sheltered Blue Flag option, about fifteen minutes from us. Main Beach is more relaxed for families. Strand runs for five kilometres of warm-water swimming. Kogel Bay is the wilder white-sand stretch on the way to Rooi-Els, beautiful, and honest safety note, with rip currents in unpatrolled sections.

Scenic drives and viewpoints

Clarence Drive on the R44 is one of the great coastal drives, running from Gordon's Bay past Rooi-Els. The Sir Lowry's Pass viewpoint sits just above us. Franschhoek Pass is about thirty-five minutes away, and Chapman's Peak and Cape Point make a full day out. Whales are close to shore from June to November.

Helderberg Nature Reserve is the everyday favourite for us: fynbos slopes, gentle trails, tortoises in the grass. Lourensford's Sunday market keeps children busy while parents graze. Blue Rock cable-ski is a bigger day out and runs October to April. Sea Point promenade is about an hour away when you want the city and the sea.

Chorus at our very own Waterkloof Wine Estate sits a few minutes down Sir Lowry's Pass Road, glass walls looking out over False Bay. Bloom at Erinvale, next door on the Erinvale Golf Estate, is our neighbourhood signature restaurant. 96 Winery Road sits between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. Vergelegen's Camphors works well on a tasting day, and for the full occasion La Colombe in Franschhoek is worth the drive and the booking window. Ask us and we will help you get the table.

    Signature restaurant at Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa on the neighbouring golf estate. Executive Chef Sebastian Smith. Bertie's Moorings on Harbour Island in Gordon's Bay is where we send guests for a long lunch on the deck. Live music at weekends. The Hussar Grill at Waterstone Village handles a proper steak evening. Peregrine Farm Stall is the classic stop on the way over the pass, for pies and country produce.

Stay in nights

Some nights the estate is the plan. Light the KolKol wood-fired hot tub in the afternoon and soak by dark. Fire the pizza oven, chill a bottle of Cap Classique. The covered braai courtyard with the lantern-lit pergola works in any weather. Firewood is on us.

How far is the nearest wine tasting?

Idiom Wines sits about five minutes from Plot 50. Journey's End and Lourensford are within ten minutes. Vergelegen is about eight minutes on the Somerset West side.

When can we see whales from the coast?

Southern Right whales are close to shore in the Western Cape from June to November, with peak numbers in September and October. Clarence Drive on the R44 gives you shore-side viewing.

What delivery services reach the estate?

Checkers Sixty60 and Mr D both deliver reliably to Plot 50, High Riding Road, Sir Lowry's Pass, 7135. Scan the QR codes on the delivery card to install either app before you arrive.

Is the KolKol hot tub included?

Yes. The wood-fired KolKol tub at The Retreat is part of the stay. We supply the firewood. Light it in the afternoon and it is soaking-warm by dark.
